Scientific and Physical Characteristics

Tarkint 001 is an officially recognized Martian (shergottite) meteorite, entered in the Meteoritical Bulletin as a valid, approved Martian specimen. It was approved on 21 December 2025 following its submission and analysis.
The type specimen for Tarkint 001 has a total known mass of approximately 2 kg, collected from several fragments found in a desert area ~60 km east of the village of Tarkint, northeast of Gao in Mali.
Petrographic and electron microprobe analysis shows that the meteorite is an olivine‑phyric shergottite, with large, mm‑scale brown‑green olivine phenocrysts set in a fine‑grained, tan groundmass. Olivine crystals exhibit core‑rim igneous zoning, and plagioclase has been converted to maskelynite — characteristic features of Martian shergottites.
Other minor phases such as chromite, titanium‑magnetite, and troilite are present, and the specimen displays a partially welded fusion crust on exterior surfaces.
As a Martian meteorite from a shergottite group, this slice represents material from the Martian crust formed via igneous processes, offering collectors and scientists a direct sample of Mars geology.
