Campo del Cielo meteorites originate from one of the largest known iron meteorite strewn fields on Earth, located in the Chaco region of northern Argentina. The meteorite fall occurred approximately 4,000–5,000 years ago, when an iron-rich meteoroid entered Earth’s atmosphere and fragmented before impact, producing numerous large meteorite masses and impact craters across the strewn field. The first recorded European account dates to 1576, when Spanish authorities investigated reports of a large iron mass in the region.
The Campo del Cielo meteorites are classified as IAB-MG iron meteorites and consist predominantly of iron and nickel, with characteristic metallic phases including kamacite and taenite. Their structure and composition provide valuable information about the materials present in early Solar System bodies. Numerous substantial masses have been recovered from the strewn field, including some weighing several hundred kilograms or more, making Campo del Cielo one of the most important and historically significant iron meteorite finds.
